End of Season Presentation:
We're already turning our attention to the Junior Summer Competition, however yesterday we took a pause to celebrate the successful Junior Winter Competition just completed.
And celebrate we did! It was a great afternoon and pleasing to see so many club members turn up to applaud their children and peers. We had fantastic volunteers step up to help set up the presentation area and run the bbq, and help pack up at the end.
The club doesn't survive if not for the volunteers who give up their time for free to make these events happen - loud applause to you all!
Coaches' awards and medallions were presented to all 21 teams who participated from U10s through to U16s. There were lots of smiles and it's a credit to each player, coach and manager for what was achieved. We'll put up some pictures from the day shortly.
The year in review:
We achieved so much this year and it is a credit to our committee members, coaches and other volunteers that we were able to. Here are just a few things that we did:
Purchased fantastic new team kits for each team, including sports bag, discs, cones, coaches boards and bibs for training.
We ran a couple of coaching workshops for our group of dedicated coaches with Leonard King and Jontee Brown from Basketball ACT.
The club was a Canberra Capitals Ambassador for the 2023-24 WNBL season - those who attended one of the last home games in February at the Royal Theatre had a fantastic time, including the kids who participated in floor-wiping during the game and in the half-time entertainment!
We held a successful Bunnings BBQ fundraiser and will be looking to do more over the next few months.
We launched the new website and upgraded our email service.
We well down the road to securing another training venue for the club, which is timely with the influx of players registering interest for the Summer season!
We are also organising a beginner referee course in the coming weeks - keep an eye out for more information soon.
Summer Season Trials - Week 2:
The second week of trials is on this week, so please check the days and times for your age group on our home page. Upon completion of the trials, I hope you all enjoy a bit of downtime over the school holidays before the summer season starts up.
Be safe!
And.... the footy!
Oh... for those of you interested in AFL, I'm eagerly looking forward to my team (the Sydney Swans) take on the Brisbane Lions in the AFL Grand Final next Saturday! For a bit of nostalgia, the Melbourne teams from which the Swans (South Melbourne) and Lions (Fitzroy) owe their heritage, last played against each other in a grand final way back in 1899, with Fitzroy winning that day. Let's hope the Swans come out on top this time!!
Cheers,
Phil
